On June 10th, FPC organised a mini-symposium on tunnel safety. The first session discussed methodologies to develop and evaluate tunnel fire safety measures during the design phase and the tunnel’s life cycle. The second session was a presentation of the Calahan project and a demo of its Crisis Management Decision Support Software, NoKeos.
Amongst the attendees were several fire officers, representatives of the Flemish government and tunnel managers. Their interests, questions and concerns on the topic were expressed during an open discussion after the sessions. All parties acknowledged the need for a better legal framework, the involvement of an independent fire engineer in the design stage and appreciated the benefits in crisis management brought by a tool like NoKeos.
Calahan successfully deployed during large scale SEVESO exercise in the port of Antwerp
The Calahan crisis management scenarios were put to the test during a large scale exercise at VOPAK in the port of Antwerp.
The exercise involved over 150 Private and public emergency managers from multiple agencies. The NoKeos crisis management software was used to coordinate the information and decision flow from the VOPAK crisis management team, fire brigade, police, health care, civil defense, port authorities, crisis communications, the city of Antwerp and province of Antwerp. Lessons were learned on how to further fine tune the scenarios. Consequently the city of Antwerp has decided to start using NoKeos as its standard crisis management platform in the crisis control room of its brand new fire station.
